Posted by: Zap 10/14/08, 2:09 PM Provided by: Askmen.com Many men are devoted to exercise to bulk up their bodies, but the phrase “use it or lose it” applies to more than just the muscles in our bodies -- it also applies to the neural pathways and connections in our brains. There are a variety of exercises and activities that can successfully work each of the brain’s five major cognitive functions on a daily basis. In addition to the tasks you can perform daily, you can also train your brain with HAPPYneuron online brain games and a personalized brain fitness program. Rangers prospect dies during game

Posted by: Zap 10/14/08, 4:52 AM NEW YORK (TICKER) —New York Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov died during a game in his native Russia on Monday night. He was 19. The New York Post reported that Cherepanov suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the bench during Avangard Omsk’s game against Vityav Chekhov. Former Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr had just finished a shift with Cherepanov and was talking to the him when the Russian suddenly collapsed. TSN of Canada reported that medical officials attempted to get Cherepanov’s heart beating again. According to the web site, the ambulance that is normally at all games had already departed and had to be called back to the arena. The report stated that it took between “15 and 20 minutes” to transport Cherepanov from the arena to the hospital. “They tried to get his heart started again but they couldn’t,” Omsk head coach Wayne Fleming told the web site. How to lower your credit rate

Wednesday October 8, 4:02 pm ET Ken Clark One of the great misperceptions about credit card debt is that the cards themselves are bad. The truth is, they're really not. Rather, it's the effect of double-digit interest rates that make them so toxic to our personal finances. The exponential growth of the account balance quickly causes purchases we thought we'd easily pay off over a few months to grow into something that seems like it will take years to knock out. Luckily, ridiculous interest rates don't have to be part of your credit-card experience. Like many things in life, they are negotiable for those who know who to talk to and what strings to pull. If you can do a little bit of work to get inside your credit card company's head and are willing to spend 15-20 minutes on the phone, there's at least a 50% chance you can save yourself a few thousand dollars in the next 12 months. Why Should You Try To Get Your Rate Lowered? You're probably reading this artic...

New Genetic Links to Baldness Discovered

By Ed Edelson, HealthDay Reporter - Mon Oct 13, 4:04 PM PDT SUNDAY, Oct. 12 (HealthDay News) -- New genetic links to male pattern baldness have been discovered by researchers in England and Germany. It's the second genetic connection to the kind of hair loss that many men -- and women -- experience as they grow older, said Felix F. Brockschmidt, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Bonn and one of the authors of a report published online Oct. 12 in the journal Nature Genetics. "The first gene known until now is on the X chromosome," Brockschmidt said. "It is the most important for alopecia [hair loss]. We are sure that this new locus we found is the second most important." The discovery could open the way for genetic tests to single out men most likely to lose hair as they age, Brockschmidt said. "Screening for the X chromosome locus and also for this new one can possibly show the risk of male pattern baldness," he said. But whether something can...

5 Salary Secrets Your Company Won't Tell You

by Joy Victory, PayScale.com., 10/13/08 6:55 PM It's normal to wonder how and why you get paid the salary you do. After all, it's not a decision process most employers are willing to disclose, at least not without a little prodding. So what are the best-kept secrets when it comes to salary decisions at most companies? And how can you use them to your advantage? Let's take a look. 1. For most companies, 3.9% is the average budget increase for salaries. Yes, sad but true. According to the 35th annual WorldatWork Salary Budget Survey, the "actual increase in salary budgets was 3.9% in 2008." The number is expected to stay the same in 2009. This means, that for most U.S. workers, the average raise will be about the same, with "high performers" receiving about a 5% raise, and "low performers" receiving 2% or less, the survey authors note. "When people are looking for 6-8%, well, very few people are getting it," says Rebecca Mazin, co-found...
