36 facts about the Olympic medal count

By Chris Chase Sunday, Aug 24, 2008 1:25 pm EDT In honor of the 36 gold medals won by the United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Fourth-Place Medal presents 36 interesting facts about the overall medal count: 1) China won the most gold medals at the Beijing Games with 51. They become the first country to crack the 50-gold mark since the Soviet Union in 1988. The most golds ever won in a single Olympics is 83 (United States, 1984). 2) It's the first time since 1936 that a country other than the United States or the Soviet Union has led the medal count. 3) China won more golds in Beijing (51) than they did total medals in Atlanta (50). 4) 'Project 119' was a Chinese initiative designed toward winning golds in the medal-rich sports of swimming, track, rowing, kayaking and sailing. Reports are already crediting Project 119 with China's dominance in the gold medal count, but Chinese athletes won just four golds in those sports. Their total was instead augmented by even b...

Healthy Food, Fast

by Aging Backwards, on Thu Aug 21, 2008 7:40am PDT New York City is number one again - this time they're the first city in the U.S. to require major fast food restaurants to post the calorie content of all their menu items. The chains have had nutrition facts available for a long time, but now the calories are actually posted - prominently. Here's an example of calorie content for some popular choices: a Big Mac with medium fries and a medium soda contains 1130 calories, according to the McDonald's menu. A Whopper with medium fries and a medium coke has "only" 1040, according to Burger King's Web site. Aging Backwards Fast Food Tips: 1) Look for salads on the menu. Most fast food restaurants offer a few healthy choices, including salads, but go easy on the amount of dressing you use and skip the cheese and croutons, or use only half. 2) Lose the bun. A hamburger actually provides decent protein - it's the bun that has little or no nutritional value. Eat ...

Openly gay diver wins gold!

By Maggie Hendricks Saturday, Aug 23, 2008 5:02 pm EDT Diver Matthew Mitcham, the only openly gay male athlete in the Beijing Olympics, won gold in the 10m platform. He beat Chinese favorite Zhou Luxin by 4.8 points, preventing China from sweeping gold in diving events. Mitcham is the first Aussie to win diving gold since 1924, but that's not the only thing that makes him a trailblazer. He received the highest single-dive score in Olympic history. He is hardly the first gay athlete to compete but he is one of the first to be out while competing. American diver Greg Louganis did not share his orientation until his diving career was over. To Mitcham, he is just living his life as a gay man and as a diver, and there is nothing extraordinary about that: “Being gay and diving are completely separate parts of my life. Of course there’s going to be crossover because some people have issues, but everyone I dive with has been so supportive." Though he wants to be known as more than a g...

Masturbation: Prostate Cancer Buster!

People have always linked masturbation with adult topics of discussions as because the first thought that comes with the word masturbation, is sex and lust. The society is normally hesitant and feels awkward to discuss on the subject of masturbation, openly and freely. Well, that is fine! But do the elders know the benefit of masturbation? I bet, not! A recent research-study has discovered an amazing fact about masturbation that may change the outlook of the society on the whole. Researchers have found out that men who masturbate regularly are at a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. Yes, you read it right! In the study, Australian researchers concluded that frequent masturbation may help men cut their risk of contracting prostate cancer. It is believed that carcinogens may build up in the prostate if men do not ejaculate regularly, reported BBC News. The researchers surveyed more than 1,000 men who had developed prostate cancer, and 1,250 men who had not. They found that men w...

The 11 Best Foods You Aren’t Eating!

The New York Times June 30, 2008, 8:50 am Nutritionist and author Jonny Bowden has created several lists of healthful foods people should be eating but aren’t. But some of his favorites, like purslane, guava and goji berries, aren’t always available at regular grocery stores. I asked Dr. Bowden, author of “The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth,” to update his list with some favorite foods that are easy to find but don’t always find their way into our shopping carts. Here’s his advice. 1. Beets: Think of beets as red spinach, Dr. Bowden said, because they are a rich source of folate as well as natural red pigments that may be cancer fighters. How to eat: Fresh, raw and grated to make a salad. Heating decreases the antioxidant power. 2. Cabbage: Loaded with nutrients like sulforaphane, a chemical said to boost cancer-fighting enzymes. How to eat: Asian-style slaw or as a crunchy topping on burgers and sandwiches. 3. Swiss chard: A leafy green vegetable packed with c...

Apple sued over iPhone 3G reception issues!

By Steven Musil, CNET Thu Aug 21, 1:00 AM ET An Alabama woman has filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming the iPhone 3G's network is slower than advertised. In a 10-page complaint filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for Northern Alabama, Birmingham resident Jessica Alena Smith charged Apple with breach of express and implied warranty and with unjust enrichment. Smith, who refers to the phone she purchased throughout the complaint as "Defective iPhone 3G," is seeking class action status. The lawsuit claims that Apple's iPhone 3G advertising campaign is misleading. "Defendant intended for customers to believe its statements and representations about the Defective iPhone 3Gs, and to trust that the device was 'twice as fast at half the price'," the lawsuit states. The charges in the lawsuit mirror widespread complaints about the iPhone 3G's reception that have crisscrossed the Internet since Apple and AT&T released the successor to the origi...
