Sick of playing half-baked games of Snake on your cell phone? So is Sony. The purveyors of everything Playstation recently pulled back the curtain on what might well be the Playstation Phone tech-savvy gamers-on-the-go have been clamoring for.
Due out in September, the Sony Ericsson F305 is a pocket-sized slider phone sporting a slew of features tailor-made for gamers, including dedicated versions of the familiar O and X buttons as well as motion-sensing control similar to the Nintendo Wii.
Sven Totte, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson, is quick to point out that they're not just biting Nintendo's style.
"Gaming is no longer something you do on your own. It's about having fun with your friends and interacting with the game," he said in a press release. "We have used motion sensor technology before in our phones and integrating it into gameplay is a natural progression."
The F305 will come pre-loaded with three motion controlled games: bass fishing, bowling and a jockey game. And while it isn't expecting to compete with high-end Blackberries, it will support EDGE network speeds and include a 2.0 megapixel camera, a media player and stereo speakers.
The real question, however, is where Sony's game division fits into all this. The company behind the Playstation brand has yet to formally announce any plans to support the phone with titles from its massive library, a move that could make it a viable threat to both Nintendo's dominant DS handheld and Apple's soon-to-be-gaming iPhone.
