"Mummy" beats Batman at foreign box office

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" replaced "The Dark Knight" in the top spot at the foreign box office during the weekend after opening at No. 1 in 26 of its 28 markets.

The third film in the adventure series grossed an estimated $59.5 million, substantially outpacing comparable openings for 1999's "The Mummy" ($16.7 million) and 2001's "The Mummy Returns" ($21.5 million) in the same markets.

The film, starring Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello and Michelle Yeoh, opened at No. 2 in North America, as "The Dark Knight" extended its reign for a third weekend.

Top markets for "The Mummy" included South Korea ($13.3 million), Russia ($12.7 million), Spain ($6.7 million), Mexico ($5.1 million), and Brazil ($3.1 million).

"The Dark Knight," meanwhile, drew $37 million from 51 markets. The total for the Batman saga rose to $202.5 million.

"WALL-E" finished at No. 3, after earning $15.7 million from 24 markets for an overseas total of $95 million. In France, the cartoon opened at No. 1 with $7.2 million; it also premiered in first place in the Netherlands and Belgium.

"Mamma Mia!" was No. 4, thanks to a $14.6 million weekend in 22 markets. The musical has tallied $140.7 million to date, with Britain kicking in $63.8 million after 24 days.

Ranking fifth overall was the Will Smith superhero saga "Hancock," which pulled in $11.9 million from 71 territories. Its international total stands at $319.1 million.
Other foreign totals: "Kung Fu Panda," $328 million; "Wanted," $115.6 million; "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," $246 million; "The Incredible Hulk," $111.5 million; and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," $459 million.
